Meryl Ann Butler has been a popular presenter at A.R.E. Headquarters and field events since 1986, and is well known as the creator of the Vortices of Light wallhanging that graced the A.R.E.’s Main Auditorium for many years.
She has been a labyrinth builder and workshop facilitator since 1992, the same year she offered the first labyrinth presentation at A.R.E. Headquarters.
She has offered labyrinth events across the U.S. for such diverse audiences as: The United Methodist Church, The New England Women Ministers’ Association, Agape International Spiritual Center in Culver City, CA; The Learning Tree Educational Center in Los Angeles and Women’s Circle Full Moon events in Virginia Beach.
She designed and built the first labyrinth at Edgar Cayce’s Association of Research and Enlightenment in Virginia Beach in 1996 and also designed and facilitated the creation of a Chartres-style painted labyrinth at the A.R.E. Center in Houston, Texas. Meryl Ann also built a temporary Chartres-style labyrinth, over 60 feet in diameter, in Red Rocks National Park for the Heal the Earth as One festival in 1996; a Classical/Cretan labyrinth made of rocks in a private collection in upstate New York, a pair of labyrinths at Stillwaters retreat center in northern Virginia, and a personal labyrinth for a celebrity family in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles.
She has created hundreds of labyrinths on various surfaces, including cloth, canvas, paper, concrete, sand, and dirt. In 2005, she was the first artist-in-residence selected to work with Labyrinth Enterprises in St. Louis, the world’s largest producer of labyrinths.
